Your schedule revolves around appointments. Your conversations revolve around health. Your decisions revolve around someone else’s needs. Eventually, you may realize you have not asked yourself a simple question in a long time: What do I need? You Still Matter Being responsible for another person does not erase your identity. You are still allowed to have: • Interests • Friendships • Career goals • Rest • Hobbies • Relationships • Dreams • Personal boundaries Rest is not something you earn after everything is finished. Caregiving rarely reaches a point where everything is finished. Make Room for Yourself Start small. Schedule 20 minutes for something unrelated to caregiving. Call a friend. Read. Take a walk. Work on a personal goal. Sit somewhere quiet. You do not need to reclaim your entire life in one day. You simply need to remind yourself that your life still exists alongside your caregiving role. You are not abandoning your loved one by remembering who you are. You are protecting the person who has to keep showing up. |
